FAQs About Being a Club Skater
When do skaters generally practice?
Ice time for skaters in club is scheduled in 45 minutes increments and is available after school-7:00pm during the school year. There are morning times available during the summer.
What are the main components of a lesson/session with a coach?
There are two segments to the 45 min. session. A coach will spend an agreed upon amt of time (usually around 20 min) one-on-one in lesson with the skater, and then the skater has the remaining minutes to practice individually.
How many skating sessions are required per week?
Skaters are encouraged to schedule a minimum of two sessions a week.
How often do most skaters compete?
There is no definite answer to this question, but younger developing skaters are encouraged to aim for three competitions a year.
Are sessions held at numerous rinks, or always at BIG?
Practice sessions are always at BIG unless otherwise noted. Competitions are almost exclusively located at rinks near the metro area. Parents select which competitions work well for their schedule and child's comfort level.
Do skaters take the summer off?
Skaters do not take a "summer break" or seasonal break from skating due to competition scheduling, which lends itself to year-round skating.
Aren't skates and dresses extremely expensive?
There are definitely vendors that provide new, top-of-the-line skates, blades, and dresses. That being said, there are also many places to look for used skates and blades! Your coach can help you find a pair is the right fit and the right price for you! Dresses can also be found used. The FSCB often has a selection of dresses that can be borrowed when needed.
